Why do people said Deaf kids who go to school are Special Education?

Sammy Hatzenbihler: I am Deaf.

Venetta Coulbourne: because they require special needs, specially trained teachers, special equipment.

Alonso Crehan: While I realize that signing is a language-culture like Spanish...etc, it does require an accommodation which is not automatically provided to people who are enrolled in a 'regular' classroom, where you cannot successfully do the work, you fail. And the infrastructure used to provide this accommodation is not in the ESL department of American public schools, it is in the special education. However this does not mean that the student will have a 'dumbed down' curriculum, Accommodations can simply mean an interpreter and/or hearing aids/hearing aid repairs...etc. It also refers to a curriculum and/or services which are not standard, individually planned to meet a student's specific needs. I too had obtained special education services when I was enrolled in public school. But I also was the first special ed student t! o take AP classes, ultimately going on to college and graduate school--where I maintained a cumulative 4.0 GPA....Show more

Hyo Hardell: on a similar time as I understand that signing is a language-way of existence like Spanish...etc, it does require an lodging which isn't immediately provided to those who're enrolled in a 'oftentimes happening' lecture room, the place you won't be able to effectively do the artwork, you fail. And the infrastructure used to furnish this lodging isn't in the ESL branch of yankee public colleges, it incredibly is in the particular guidance. although this would not advise that the student might have a 'dumbed down' curriculum, lodging can only advise an interpreter and/or listening to aids/listening to help maintenance...etc. It additionally refers to a curriculum and/or amenities that are no longer known, in my view planned to fulfill a student's particular desires. I too had won particular guidance amenities whilst i became into enroll! ed in public college. yet I additionally became into the 1st p! articular ed student to take AP training, finally happening to varsity and graduate college--the place I maintained a cumulative 4.0 GPA....Show more

Jonelle Eligio: Any school that has special accommodations to enable a student to learn is referred to special education by schools and school professionals. Deaf school is special ed.Some people have the misinformed belief that special ed means the student has a deficit in intelligence. That is unfortunate but not true.I can understand why a person or friend of a person in deaf school would not want it called special ed because of this but instead of denying it, I'd suggest educating people that being deaf does not mean a person is less intelligent.Added- My child was in special ed for severe depression. They called it E.D. I thought it meant emotionally disabled. I turned out to mean emotionally disturbed! That's offensive! He also took the "short bus" which people associate with brain damaged. His IQ was extremely high! .We had to learn not to let labels define him. If you or someone you care about is deaf, I suggest (I know it's hard) keeping in mind that people who think less of a person because a hearing impairment are ignorant and their opinion isn't of value. Try not to let them bother you....Show more

Chris Coggins: safron = Do you mean they are Special Education?

Lou Rought: Special Education is any service provided to students with documented disabilities. I am sure that his school receives federal and state funding on that basis. Every time an IEP meeting is held, they do a funding Matrix to submit for funds from the government. We all have some disabling condition, but when a condition interferes with the child's ability to learn, then we call special education or exceptional student education. It isn't meant to carry a stigma, but unfortunately it does because many people don't realize how "able" most of the kids are.I have worked in special education for many years ! and I see it as a good thing....Show more

Vince Delarge: I agree ! with you not everyone that is deaf should be in special ed. I know someone who read all the time. and he is deaf. I would feel bad also if people talked down to me and it is very offensive

Hope Lundmark: Karrose = Well , it does offensive me.
