Bethany Blocker: This is a tough question to answer, I do not think it is just one thing. I have worked/volunteered in the schools for 12 years, and even thought my daughter graduated in 2010, I still volunteer there. From what I have seen a lot of parents do not care. I am not saying you have to be as involved as I was, but at least attend a conference, if they are on a night you have to work then call the teacher and ask for a private meeting if your child is having trouble. The teachers I know beg parents to come in and talk to them. Ask your child every night if they have homework or a test they need to study for. Help them if they need it. Check their progress on the school website, if your district has that. Tenure: Most teachers are wonderful and do a great job, but some have just given up and do not care anymore. At least in MI it is now easier to get rid of teachers like that. Teach your kids to respect all people when they are young. I cannot tell you how many k! ids I have seen mouth off to teachers and administrators. Standardize testing needs to go. These test have nothing to do with how smart a child is or how well teachers teach No Child Left Behind is a joke!...Show more
Morris Olexy: Bullying and mean teachers.
Karey Dunken: Problems with public education... start with the families that students belong to. Many parents don't do their part to promote education in the home. As a teachers it was difficult many times to get a hold of parents for parent-teacher conferences. There was only so much that could be done in the classroom yet many parents think that it is the job of the teacher to make sure their child is taught ALL things and did not practice anything at home. I can't tell you how many of my 2nd grade students that could not do simple addition or subtraction. It was frustrating!Too much emphasis on standardized testing! It seems like I was always teaching things that would be on a test the students would be ! taking in the future. There was hardly any time to do the fun ! educational things that had nothing to do with those stupid test. Many kids aren't even very good test takers and they do badly on the test and it affects them a great deal.Teachers that refuse to change the way they teach to suit the needs of students just because they have been doing it a certain way for all their teaching life. Administrators that don't support teachers in the hectic job of teaching unwilling students and annoying-nagging parents.NEA - they are trying to ruin the country by controlling the learning of each student and how it is done....Show more
Delora Struzzi: I'm in one. Mine is excellent, we get a good education. It's a prestigious school. However-especially with No Child Left Behind, a LOT of emphasis on standardized test scores and teachers forced to teach to the test. Everything depends on it.-in that vein, they must do whatever they can to increase funding. Not their fault, they are certainly not rolling in dough, but it can make things diff! icult-more a problem with teachers unions, but TERRIBLE teachers get tenure and then are impossible to fire. My friends had to sue their teacher (successfully) to get her fired. The worst part? It wasn't the first time a student had sued her....Show more
