Kirk Coolbeth: In most states you register the car when & where you buy tags. The dealer CANT do that for you but they can charge & collect sales tax and do the title work. You are responsible for paying for the registration. In many states you are good to drive with no tag for 10 days after buying as long as you keep a copy of the bill of sale with you. Its always illegal to drive without insurance but if you have insurance on another car you are often automatically covered if you buy another car for so many days....Show more

Bibi Tyron: I'm pretty sure it's illegal to drive off in an unregistered vehicle too! First thing you want to do before signing anything and forking over any money is to go on kbb.com or nada.com and look up the trade in value of the model vehicle and condition (mileage, options package, etc.). Add m! aybe ~$1000 to this for the money a reputable (doesn't hurt to check out your dealer with the local BBB either) dealer puts into a trade to make sure it's safe. Ask the salesman or manager (who usually winds up coming out before the close of negotiations) for an Out The Door price, which includes tags, tax, etc. These are vehicle dependent, not buyer dependent. The only thing you need to cough up is your proof of insurance on the vehicle you're buying. You should be able to do this over the phone and have the insurer fax the Proof of Insurance to the dealership. BTW: The best vehicle in the world = Paid For. I hope you're not financing....Show more
